The Person in Command

Primary Role

The Master has overall command of the vessel and is ultimately responsible for its safe navigation, operation, security, crew, cargo, and the protection of the marine environment.

1. Command & Leadership

• Exercises overall command of the vessel.
• Makes final operational decisions.
• Leads, mentors, and manages the ship’s crew.
• Maintains discipline and promotes a positive safety culture.

2. Navigation & Voyage Management

• Ensures the safe navigation of the vessel.
• Approves passage plans and navigational strategies.
• Ensures compliance with international regulations, company procedures, and port requirements.
• Makes critical navigational decisions when required.

3. Cargo & Ship Operations

• Oversees cargo loading, stowage, carriage, and discharge.
• Ensures the vessel remains seaworthy throughout the voyage.
• Supervises operational efficiency and ship performance.

4. Safety, Security & Emergency Response

• Ensures compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, the ISM Code, and company procedures.
• Leads emergency response and crisis management.
• Protects the safety of the crew, vessel, cargo, and marine environment.

5. Administration & External Relations

• Reviews and approves official ship records and statutory documentation.
• Represents the ship before port authorities, flag State inspectors, charterers, pilots, and company representatives.
• Maintains effective communication with the company and relevant stakeholders.
