A MARINE PILOT

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Safely boards and disembarks vessels.
  • Advises the Master during pilotage.
  • Navigates vessels through ports, rivers, channels, and other restricted waters.
  • Provides expert local knowledge of tides, currents, depths, and navigational hazards.
  • Coordinates with tugs, mooring teams, and Vessel Traffic Services (VTS).
  • Assists in the safe berthing, unberthing, and shifting of vessels.
  • Recommends safe speeds, courses, and maneuvering actions.
  • Helps ensure the safety of the vessel, crew, cargo, port facilities, and the environment.

Did you know?
The Marine Pilot provides expert local knowledge and advises the Master during pilotage. However, the Master retains overall command and legal responsibility for the vessel at all times.
